Can You Give Me A Practical Definition Of Positive Attitude?

You can definitely write down a definition of positive attitude when you look back at what your life has been so far, and realize the good and bad times.

Look at the difficult times where, for any reason, you had to put on your best act and throw yourself into the uncertain - and you did. Remember the times you smiled and took it easy, although it was not.

There you were having a positive attitude.

Let's have a look at different definitions of attitude that you can find over the net:

  1. Wikipedia says that attitude "is a concept in psychology. Attitudes are positive or negative views of an 'attitude object': i.e. a person, behavior or event".

  2. Dictionary.com defines attitude as "a state of mind or a feeling; disposition: had a positive attitude about work".

  3. Princeton University says that attitude is "a complex mental state involving beliefs and feelings and values and dispositions to act in certain ways; 'he had the attitude that work was fun'".

Take now the following definition of positive attitude: "a person's disposition towards life in a manner that shows optimism" (as opposed to a pessimistic point of view).

Optimism, as defined by Dictionary.com, means "a tendency to expect the best possible outcome or dwell on the most hopeful aspects of a situation". Does this sound like you?

Show me your positive side

You may have a general positive attitude towards life, but you can also see that it's easy to feel good and optimistic when things go well.

It is when reality gets tough that having a positive attitude will help you move forward smoothly. It's at difficult times that you really show your positive side: exactly when it's not easy to do.

Life happens in practical terms

You can only know how great and strong you are by practicing - next time you've got difficult circumstances, throw yourself in them with a positive attitude. Decide that you'll look for the good in them, that you will keep your head up no matter what. Surprise yourself.

In regards to choosing your attitude, Epictetus said...

"First say to yourself what you would be;
and then do what you have to do"
